If the indemnification is not granted, Greene's family will be greatly in debt and in dire straights. Jackson agrees to pay the debt that his adopted son, Andrew Jackson Jr., owes on furniture that he had purchased two years earlier. Jackson adopted his son as an infant from his wife's brother and sister-in-law, Severn and Elizabeth Rucker. His high hopes for Andrew Jackson Jr. were never realized, and Jackson spent much of his last decade paying off debts for his son, as in this letter.
