He expresses regret about moving to Nome but says Alaska has taught him self-reliance and confidence. He counsels Owen on choosing a wife according to the "Planet under which they are born…

Adds, "Do you feel like marching down there and whipping some of those Southerners? I am looking every day to hear that war has commenced and I fear if it does that there will be blood shed for some time."
