Joseph just bought a Clipper newspaper; he believes "there has been a battle some place, but I cannot tell you where till I read the paper." They are only able to shoot hogs and birds when on picket. Their shanty caught fire the night they were on picket. He addresses Susannah to tell her that a box she wrote Wilmor about has not arrived. He will send home three likenesses.

Writes to his son that at times he becomes discouraged not knowing what the coming season will bring. The days are short, the sun rises at 9:30 am and sets at 1:45 pm. "The camp is quite civilized this winter compared to last…" The Editor of the "Nome News" stated that this Thanksgiving there was turkey and mince pies, and last Thanksgiving there was beans and rice. This year there were dress suits and "decollette dresses" at a dance, and last year there were overalls and parkas. There is a school there with 2 teachers and 50 pupils.

He is on the Copper river at the mouth of the Chistochina river 165 miles from Valdez. Mentions being poisoned with mosquito gnats. Believes he has a good chance of getting work from Government contracts next year and will start carrying the winter mail with a dog team in November. Describes the wildlife and vegetation, including the "Indian potato."

Gives the boys college and nutrition advice. Disucsses a cinnamon dog he bought for his team. Speculates about his plans after Alaska. Says the Guggenheims have their "claws" everywhere.

He was very excited to open his box of clothes, food and other materials. "I took as much pleasure . . . as children usually do in emptying their stockings on Christmass [sic] morning." He reports that the monitor "Weehawken" has sunk, probably due to a boiler explosion. He is upset by the reports of the Sanitary Commission which tell of the hardships at Belle Island, a prisoner of war camp in Richmond. He worries over the fate of a soldier. "I am afraid one of my men, 'Sam Patterson' the Indian is still at Belle Island."

Received a package from home. The honey jar broke and made everything sticky, but did no real damage. A family across the river sent some butter and wine jelly as a thank you for ice sent to them when they were sick. The family had treated McClellan's troops well in 1862 and as a result, had special privileges with the current army.

He describes rebel deserters who complain of a lack of food, clothing and pay.
