His thoughts on this responsibility illustrate his ideas about leadership and discipline. Also describes a boat trip that he took with a few other officers on the Trent River. Believes his illness is being caused by drinking water that has traces of lime from limestone in it. The doctor tells him to mix cider vinegar with the water to counteract the effects. Mentions a message issued by President James Buchanan and the speed with which it crossed the Rocky Mountains, and comments that it is "unnecessarily filled with Kansas." Written at Camp Floyd

Captain Isaac Guion of the 3rd Sub Legion will resume his duty as Sub Legionary Major and Inspector. States that the quartermaster will order the horses arriving from Fort Hamilton be sent with a shipment of flour to the port on the St. [Shary?]. Orders that the sawyers and boat builders will continue their business without interruption. Wayne was the general in command of the United States Army in Greeneville, Ohio.
