Reports that they have been encamped for two days getting clothes for men, noting that one man did not even have shoes or socks. Henry writes to his parents and sister from a fort in Virginia. Name of fort is illegible. Reports he has a fever and chills. States he is going to enlist for five years to fight the Indians on the frontier. Requests news from home. Mentions all the articles of clothing he has purchased since he enlisted.

Writes to his wife telling her that they are still at the old Camp and he is enjoying good health. Although he states, "I believe that I told you that I got my face disfigured in the last fight at Chancerlsville [Chancellorsville] on Sunday last they shot of the left side of my mustachie as nice as a pair of shears could have clipped it..." Inquires about her health, noting that she was ill when he left. Tells her that he will either come home to recruit or will be consolidated elsewhere and mustered out. Reports that he thinks he will get a furlough sometimes this week. Speaks of being "thrown into a Regiment on Wednesday..."

Writes from Camp Wayne, communicating that he is glad she is feeling better. Reports that he got his fatigue suit. Expresses concern that he does not know when he will get his furlough, as three boys have recently gotten sick and will get a furlough before this. States he is now enrolled in "7 Regiment of Pennsylvania Reserve Volunteer Commanded by Colonel Harvey." Tells her each regiment has 1046 men in it, and each company has 101 men.

Discusses all she has had to do since her husband's death and reveals that she is pregnant since three months before his death. Comments on her hope to be a good mother but willingness to die, if it is God's will. Discusses money problems with the Insurance League the, distribution of clothes, and supplies sent. Notes plans to get her son's picture taken and that he does not look like his father. Explains her son's reaction to the death and her inability to leave to live with a sister.

Explains that her health and taking care of her new baby has prevented her from writing sooner. Discusses how the baby keeps her up at night and how she and her other son were both sick recently. Compares her son's two schools, preferring the one far away (Rigg's School) but explains that she is not able to spare his help around the house. Notes a collection for a headstone for her late husband. Discusses her insurance money from the Bishop. Thanks Mrs. Shiras for a dress she sent and hopes she is well.
