He says that if the army does actually fall back, he will speedily make arrangements to be with her. He writes that he has selected a dress for his wife, baby, and aunt and that he will get them when he receives his monthly pay.

He still has the pain in his side, which he hopes does not augur anything fatal. He suspects that his office will close soon and he plans that when he does he will leave for home until "Conscript man [sic]."

In addition to informing her that he has received a letter from Uncle Jack, he writes that he will try to send a dress for Lizzie and a handkerchief for Aunt Betsy (with prices marked on them so she will be able to collect the money). He hopes that she will be able to stay with Uncle Morton and Aunt Betsy for a while. Fears that his office may close. If so, he will have to enlist as a private, as he does not expect a position. He blames his own failings for this, not his friends.

He got three handkerchiefs for Aunt Betsy at $1.50 a piece. He asks her to deliver them and collect the money. He says he has yet to hear about his application and that further delay should be expected with the resignation Mr. Randolph from the Cabinet. He admits that not hearing much from home leads him to think that the family has forgotten him.

Has also sent a trunk of gowns to Lucy's house via Mr. Colburn, intended for Miss DeBlois. Also asks Lucy to report to him about Miss DeBlois when she next sees her. A newspaper clipping, the obituary of one of Arnold's sons, is attached to the document. The copy was made around 1855.

States that Clark received two and a half yards of white duffle and half a yard of "Ozenb" from ordnance store. "Ozenb" is short for Ozenbrig, another name for the fabric Osnaburg. Osnaburg was a coarse linen fabric first manufactured in Prussia, but the name often was used to refer to coarse cotton similar to the original. These fabrics were often used to make various inexpensive pieces of clothing, including trousers, shirts, and jackets.
