He discusses the losses from Battle of Gettysburg, " the hardest battle that has ever been fought on this continent," and lists a page and a half of friends and comrades who lost their lives in Pennsylvania. Letter was initially sent in a letter to George Wortham, GLC02233.05, for forwarding to Rowland. Also encloses a copy of a circular (no longer present), which has left an ink burn on the verso reading "To Arms! To Arms! Our Fatherland is in Danger." Alexander W. Rowland was a corporal in Company D of the Twelfth North Carolina Infantry.
