The lack of values and courage have led to "the eve of a National Bankruptcy." The proper leader must be devoted to the public and have a good understanding, not coveting a Parliamentary seat but must sacrifice for the principle of justice, with charity and love of God and country.

"There was never a more corrupt and sinful government than ours has been" for the past 20 years. Believes the war will not end until there is no more "fraud, dishonesty, deceit, and immorality." Finally got paid for 4 months pay. Was going to be paid, but the raid interrupted pay. The paymaster returned, but without sufficient money for the whole regiment, and had to return to Washington. He finally came back with 4 months of pay yesterday.…

Mentions saloons and gambling: "This place is certainly awful for disreputable characters, you can go into any of the saloons or gambling houses and see the women gambling and mixing with the men and in some of them they run the tables." Mr. McTaggart took photographs of their camp. He loves her. How he learned to make pies by just doing it.

He discusses the experience of those overseas, explaining that they all "burn with the injustice, inhumanity of the entire mess..."

Served for seven years in the U.S. patent office after being recommended by various generals, including Winfield Scott. Docket remarks indicate that Kearney has been recommended for discharge; among other things, his moral character is evaluated as "bad."

This letter to the Secretary of the Treasury concerns the collector of taxes for the District of Perl River. According to Woodhouse he is behaving in a manner that is not totally honorable. He asks the Secretary to look into it and provides a list of names that will bear witness to his actions. The name John Sherman has been attached because he was the Secretary of the Treasury when this letter was written and while he is not addresses in a personal matter he was the office holder then.
