Historical Background: An emission of £100,000 in legal tender bills of credit had been planned since May 10, 1768 but never obtained the consent of the English king. Following the outbreak of the Revolution the issue was emitted as proclamation money. The notes were made legal tender on September 20, 1776 and recalled by January 1, 1780. Reports to his brother-in-law that William Meredith, Secretary of the Treasury, wrote to the Committee of Commerce in the House of Representatives regarding the subject of coinage. Reports that he will take the issue to Senate the following day. States that the admission of California to the Union as a free state in the Compromise of 1850 will not "break up, break down, or overset the Union" though the Union "may be tipped ... as a cart is liable to tip up when a heavy weight is put in to the hind end." Humorously ends by saying "You may go, on buying & selling, & getting gain."

Describes her afternoon rides in her chaise, and her visits to several friends. Mentions the loss of her immediate family, who as Loyalists fled from Boston. Expresses her wish to be with Henry. She claims the "sesech" are trying to cheat people out of money by selling bale cotton for $100 Confederate currency or $2 in silver. Times are rough and many families are starving.
