Memminger, Secretary of the Confederate Treasury, requests the financial advice of Trenholm, Confederate agent in Europe. He reports a measure adopted by the Confederate Congress for "raising 250 millions by the issue of 20 year bonds, with Coupons payable at the pleasure of the Government in Coin or Cotton." He requests Trenholm's guidance on bringing these bonds into domestic and foreign markets, stating that the bonds' value in Europe "would be compounded of two elements, the value of Gold here and Cotton there." Authorizes the Secretary of the Treasury to issue bonds "at a rate of six per centum per annum, payable at the pleasure of the owner in the currency in which interest is paid on the other bonds of the Confederate States, or in cotton of the quality of New Orleans middling, valued at eight-pense sterling per pound ... Countersigned by Secretary of State Lewis Cass. Minard Granger was convicted in October, 1853, and imprisoned in Auburn, New York. Buchanan pardoned Granger near the end of his sentence on the recommendation of his trial judge N. K. Hall. Reasons cited were that Granger gave valuable information to the marshal after his conviction and that his health had been destroyed by imprisonment. Incldues a blue paper ribbon on second page.

Bound in leather (possibly sheepskin) with metal clasp. Notes the payment of wages, and contains the names of officers and companies in the regiment. Includes receipts for the purchase and/or repair of breeches, shoes, coats, shirts, horses, and other items used for military service. One page is detached from the binding. Contains a loose treasurer's order citing an amount of "old Continental Money" inside the back cover. Book is most likely created in Worcester, Massachusetts, but this is not certain.

Includes statement of accounts. Recto of last page is the address of Thomas Richardson, Esquire, in Newport. Docket includes the signature of J. Cranston. Attested as a true copy by Secretary Thomas Ward. J. Lyndon signs as Clerk. Document consists of two pages, one appears to be a corner fragment of a full size page and the other appears to be the reverse shape and is missing a corner fragment.

Written by Major Shaw, Knox's former aide-de-camp, to Brigadier General Knox. Letter expresses the touchiness Revolutionary officers had about rank. Says no word on Knox's promotion is to be had. Hopes "The period, however, cannot be remote when Congress must decide - and either do you justice or dispense with your further services." Goes on to express dismay at Knox not receiving the promotion. References the letter he sent on 5 March as well as another he sent a week earlier. Says since his 5 March letter he has been able to reach a settlement with Massachusetts for his pay for 1780.…
