Thanks Ogden for her kindness. Says he wished to write sooner, but found it impossible because of his regiment's movements. Reports seeing many battles, stating that Gaines Mills, Manassas, Cramptons Gap, and Antietam were "the hardest fought." Writes his regiment has been thinning lately due to their frequent engagements, but two more regiments have recently joined them. He reports that the men have received their winter clothing, and concludes by informing Ogden that he has been promoted to acting sergeant major. Includes an embossed seal in the upper left hand corner.

An article, "Martial Law and Military Usurpations: Important Letter from Vice President Stephens," features a letter written to James M. Calhoun, who had been appointed Military Governor of Chattanooga by General Bragg. Stephens explains that Bragg did not have the power to declare martial law or make any such appointments. An unidentified Federal soldier leans against a stone wall that borders Antietam Creek. From here the 51st NY fired on the Confederates on the wooded ridgeline above [opposite bank] and soon charged the bridge itself. Wooden grave markers appear in front of the wall. Frassanito [Antietam, p. 240] has identified four of the graves as being those of Sgt. George W. Loud, Pvt. Edward Miller, Pvt. John Thompson, and Cpl. Michael Keefe.

The image has also been identified by Frassanito in his book "Antietam" as "Ruins of the Mumma house" and was taken by Gardner on either 9/19/62 or 9/20/62. The house was ordered to be burned by Confederates fearing that Federal forces would occupy the buildings for sharpshooting. Numeric Notation on verso: "142."
