Wilmor has heard that "the battle of yesterday is in our favor…our men took 1300 prisoners and 18 army wagons [but] it may not be true." He was only given "a pair of shoes a gunn a flanel shirt a pair of drawers." His camp moved so that is just half a mile from the capitol. He lightheartedly describes the goats nearby, wishing he could send one "by mail to you." The firing he heard earlier was a skirmish, "the rebbles wer[e] drove back" but "we lost 6 men."

Wilmor's regiment is leaving Camp Johnston. He heard the Confederates "talking and whistling yankee doodle" on picket last night. The 63rd lost three men and one was wounded because Colonel Morgan thought the Confederates were "new york boys" when they passed through his ambush and did not fire on them. Wilmor still trusts Morgan but says that Berrenger is "the boy" and "he would have shot all the rebles." The little tents they carry on their backs make them look like "land turtles."

Wilmor reports that Joseph is getting better and Charles is well. He had been sick for two weeks and has not been fighting. He threw away his knapsack and all its contents because he can no longer carry it. He is unsure how the war will continue as "we are half whip[p]ed or it looks like it" and "it is gloomy looking times here."

He describes rebel deserters who complain of a lack of food, clothing and pay.

Secretary of War Davis responds to a letter from California Senator Weller sent on 12 January 1857, which included an enclosed document from Thomas Buckmaster. Reports that Buckmaster claimed Davis had underestimated the amount of money Congress owed individuals and companies for supplies purchased by Crosman, (possibly George Hampton Crosman), former Major in the Army. Davis replied that Crosman's successor, Major Babbitt (possibly Edwin Burr Babbitt) has investigated the matter and sent an estimate on 24 January 1857 to the Ways and Means Committee.
