Written by Major Shaw as aide-de-camp to Brigadier General Henry Knox to Major Bauman. Says that "Immediately on receipt of this letter Gen Knox desires you to set out in order to meet him at this place." Tells him to provide himself with clothes for a command of considerable length of time. Says Knox is very anxious for his arrival, which should be before sunset tonight. GLC02437.01145 is Bauman's response to this letter.

Discusses the dispersal of General Jubal Early's army, and mentions scar on scabbard and hole in hat received during battle.

On 30 December he encloses two songs, "Virginia" and "Battle at Cedar Creek." Indicates that the 6th corps badge is a "cross." Mentions that he is working on muster rolls for muster the following day. In the 31 December letter, he discusses sickness of an aunt back home. Also mentions of General Robert E. Lee's plan to attack before nightfall on the 1st.

Writes his regiment has been thinning lately due to their frequent engagements, but two more regiments have recently joined them. He reports that the men have received their winter clothing, and concludes by informing Ogden that he has been promoted to acting sergeant major.
