Title continues, "of the extensive and valuable Library of the late President Jefferson, (copied from the original MS., in his hand-writing, as arranged by himself,) to be sold at auction, at the Long Room, Pennsylvania Avenue, Washington City,... on the 27th February, 1829." Printed by Gales & Seaton in Washington D.C. Catalog of the sale of Jefferson's retirement library at Monticello which includes 931 items to be sold. Jefferson's classification system is printed on page 2. Catalog priced at 12 1/2 cents.

Concerning delivery of a nail machine, pea planting, newspaper subscriptions and France's reaction to Jay's treaty. He fears France's reaction to the treaty and that they may be silent on "the principle the Count de Vergennes once expressed to me 'great nations, Sir, said he, never complain." Title: to James Dinsmore re: architecture and building projects at Monticello

The document is overall tanned. Jefferson discusses the style of doors for the North Pavilion at Monticello, mentions Poplar Forest's window frames, and suggests dismissing the worker Stewart. Dinsmore (d. 1830) was a housejoiner who worked and lived at Monticello from 1798 until 1809. He was the principal joiner for the remodeling at Monticello and was responsible for important interior finish work. He also worked for James Madison and John H. Cocke. See Jefferson Memorandum Book p. 985, note 63.

Title: to John A. Washington re: nephew's education, preparing to meet army

Faded with some losses supplied with pen facsimile. Written to his brother. Preparing materials for his departure to meet the army on the Hudson (North) River. Also discusses his precarious financial situation. "You are but little acquainted with the situation of my affairs if you suppose I have money at my command -- the contrary from bad years, bad crops or bad management is so true, that I find it difficult to support my family...." He is trying to raise money by loan, sale of negroes or any other way. In any case he will pay for his nephew's education.
