Receipt for Town of Newburyport from "The State of the Massachusetts Bay" to be paid to Jonathan Dole for expenses incurred while caring for Enoch Wing when he had the smallpox. Singed by Moses Little, Samuel Tufts and Jonathan Titcomb. Nicholas Pike signs the bottom, dated 22 January 1779, stating that the document was sworn to before him by the selectmen. A separate page is attached certifying that Enoch Wing died of the smallpox, and that the selectmen of Newburyport provided for his care. Signed by Colonel Jonathan Allen as an agent of the state.

Was shocked to read about the death of Mrs. Lear and her child in the newspaper (a reference to Mary "Polly" Long Lear, who had married Tobias Lear in 1790, and died in the yellow fever epidemic in Philadelphia). Lists the terms under which slaves will be hired out from Thomas Winn's estate. Requires that hired slaves receive medical care and limits their working conditions. The document lists each slave for hire and the requirements for each slave. Special mention is made for Phebe, who is "unhealthy and labouring under a disease called the asthma." Phebe "is not to be exposed to wet or cold weather...should she die before the end of the year, a proportionable part of the sum for which she is supported &c will only be paid."
