Gives detailed account of President Lincoln's assassination, and the last hours of the president. Also includes General Robert Lee's farewell address to the armies of Northern Virginia, a full account of the inauguration of Andrew Johnson, and reports the capture of Mobile with 3,000 prisoners and 300 guns. The paper is uncut.

Writes that he is sending along 13 1/2 yards of bottle green cloth, of Hartford manufacture. Would have sent more, but only 13 1/2 yards of this color came, and the other colors were too mean and coarse. Estimates that "[t]here will probably be enough for a coat and waistcoat for you and also for Mrs Washingtons rid[in]g dress." Reports that it was fairly inexpensive, only two dollars per yard, and he hopes the package arrives quickly and safely. Knox's retained draft.

Concerning taxation and the national debt. This was a first draft which Washington later discarded. The manuscript was disassembled by Jared Sparks and leaves or clippings were given away as samples of GW's handwriting. Sparks regarded the document as unimportant since Washington had not actually used this draft. See other leaves: GLC 639.25 and 1589.
