Written by Captain Rodgers from the U.S.S. North Carolina in port at Port Mahon, Spain. After receiving the report of Dr. Washington, Rodgers grants Mayo a three month leave of absence because of impaired health. The leave begins 1 November 1826. Envelope is a separate sheet (19.3 x 13.4 cm.) Note on verso says he went to Spain and later to Paris, where he spent part of the winter. Ran into many of his old shipmates. Marked "Copy of a Letter to J.D. Elliott," on docket. Written by Lieutenant Commander Mayo as commander of the U.S.S. Grampus to Captain Elliott as commander of the West India Squadron. Half the letter appears to be written in a clerical hand and the last half written and signed by Mayo. References Elliott's orders of 7 September 1830 (see GLC 04604.22) and says he proceeded to the coast off Havana, Cuba on 13 September. He encountered a gale on the way there, taking much water, and anchored in Mantanzas Bay on 21 September. Waited to leave until 2 October because a convoy was gathering.…

On 30 April [1778] Knox receives money for the travel expense of a journey from New England and for the expense of moving his and General [Nathanael] Greene's baggage last year to Morris Town. Written in Samuel Shaw's hand. Costs for Knox during the war. It is noted that all accounts are kept "in Currency of 7/6 to the Dollar." Most of it is for sundries, clothing, loans to various people, and room and board. Some interesting items include: a purchase of a saddle by Benjamin Lincoln from Knox on 1 July 1777, a notation that "Lt. Col. Hamilton R'd C. to the Commander in Chief" on 3 August 1777, a note that Lucy Knox was given $500 on 20 November 1777, and a note on the expenses of Lucy Knox's travels from Fredericksburgh, New York to Booneton [Boonton], New Jersey.

Expresses how much he misses her, emphasizing that nothing but an obligation to his country could separate them. Mentions the threat posed by General John Burgoyne, stating that Lucy, in Boston, should "get a House in the Country as a Retreat." Can not assure Lucy regarding a possible visit due to the danger of the roads and the uncertainty of his location. In closing, notes "I shall always make it a rule to write you by the post, and expect the same from you."
