Asks to be excused for not writing sooner, but he was waiting for the machine to run according to the notion of things. Thinks that Lieutenant Gannett is a gentleman; all his books and papers are in very good shape, but Sayne had to clean the office until it was respectable. Can find any quantity of business here, far more than he thought was possible for a Sub-District office to have. Likes this place far more than Macon, Missouri.
