Writes, "i suppose there has been great excitement there since the Rebels have invaded Maryland, But i do not think there is much cause for alarm as the the [sic] North is now thoroughly aroused and they will now help the few that have been fighting for the last year, the Boys are all in good spirits again since McClellan has got Command..." Says he called on Ogden while on his way home from the Army, but she was not at home. Notes a few days later, he took sick and was instructed by the doctor to seek treatment in the North. He has been in Maine since July. Says home is no longer the same because many of the men have left to fight in the war. Notes that despite this, recruiting quotas were not met, and a draft was installed. Concludes by telling Ogden he will be coming to Philadelphia, Pennsylvania to seek work.

Writes from Fort Ethan Allen. Informs Ogden he reenlisted twenty-nine days after being discharged from his old regiment. Says he reached Harrisburg, Pennsylvania when the Rebels were raiding Pennsylvania and "could not stand and see old Pa. invaded by no means while I have a hand to help her." He was assigned to the second New York Heavy Artillery but is unhappy with the position and wants to reenlist. States, "I am bound to stay in the army untill [sic] peace is declared for I think it is every mans dutey [sic] to help and get this settled."

Mentions that he received his cavalry uniform and arms and built a house in which he will live with two others. Notes people he met at the hospital and states that he and Sergeant Perkins were reminiscing about their stay in Ward B.
