sister [Sophia Parrott] He is glad that she is improving. Eight to ten thousand men are building five forts and when they are finished "this place will be the strongest Fortified p[l]ace in Tenn[essee]." There are skirmishes nearly every day. A shell came very close to taking his head off but he heard it coming in time to jump off his horse and the shell passed across his saddle. He has had command of the regiment since the battle of 31 December and has heard from some of his men taken prisoner then.

re: Cranor describes the Battle of Stones Creek and its aftermath for the regiment. He writes that the enemy killed or wounded eighteen in the regiment and that his colonel was drunk during the fight. Cranor speculates that this drunk Colonel will be mustered out of the service soon as a result. Despite the bad news, he writes that "it wouldent doo for a Soldier to get discouraged" and praises Rosecrans. He lauds the new commander of the Army of the Cumberland at the expense of Rosecrans' successor Don Carlo Buell, noting Rosecrans bravery and attempts to rally the troops during the battle.

Written from the frontlines of the Atlanta Campaign Cranor reports that he has seen the worst of fighting, even more so than Stones River and Missionary Ridge. He wrote "that day was the first time ever I thought of getting killed in battel when we was fighting just to look and see men falling like they did." His company sustained heavy casualties: "we had 44 men I beleave, now we have twelve men for duty." He finishes on the topic of the photographs.

He has a cold but otherwise is fine. They started toward Memphis. A lot of rain has been falling and turning into mud. On Monday fighting commenced. They camped near a corn field and the next morning after breakfast started fighting again. He goes on to describe the entire battle of Murphreesboro in great detail.

Miller writes to his wife from camp near White Oak Church. Notes Edwin M. Stanton, Secretary of War, will not allow his regiment to return to "the state," possibly Pennsylvania, where he is from. Refers to a victory of [General William] Rosecrans "in the South West" (possibly the Battle of Stones River). Writes, "But i am afraid it is dearly won when we look at the immense loss of life... our men have got in earnest and the Rebels will fight to the death... it will never Be settled now till one side [or] the other is whipped and it will never be the north..."

Reports that he has a flesh wound in his right hip from the recent battle (battle of Murfreesboro). Also writes that he was taken prisoner and paroled. Ninety-six men from his company went to battle of which twenty-five men were killed or wounded. Reports that the commander of the company was taken prisoner.

Writes that his wound is doing better. The main part of the army is about two miles south of Murfreesboro and the rebels are far ahead of them. States that his company has lost more men in the three battles (Pea Ridge, Perryville, Murfreesboro) than any other company in the regiment. Of forty-six men, twenty-seven have been killed and wounded. Writes that the regiment has suffered greatly because Johnson's and Davis' division fell back which gave the rebels an opportunity to cross fire.

Writes that he is enjoying Thanksgiving in celebration of taking Mission Ridge, Lookout Mountain and the valley. Reports that his regiment suffered more in proportion to numbers at Chickamauga than Murfreesboro. Writes that he got through the battle of (Mission Ridge) without a scratch and that none in his company were killed or wounded. Believes that the loss of the enemy is greater than that of his regiment.

Henry is sorry to hear that Sophia is not well and regrets that he cannot see her unless the war ends before the fall "which seems favorable now." They marched 65 miles in knee deep mud with after 30,000 Confederates in ten days. Some of the men used the Confederate supplies for the Winchester Daily Bulletin to publish their own version and he encloses a copy. He is in command of another company whose officers were wounded at Stone River.

Henry expects that they will stay at Camp Whiteside through the winter. They have not fought since they left Murfreesboro and he does not anticipate fighting soon since they are now in towards the rear of the Union line. He had the Bilious fever last week but is almost recovered now. He may be able to obtain a furlough soon. Written at Camp Whiteside.

They left the Nashville area on 26 December and fought almost every day on their way to Murfreesboro. He describes a very tough battle and his own close call. The Confederate guns were "so hot that they burnt our hands when we took hold of them."

Describes the events leading up to and including his involvement in the Battle of Stones River (Murfreesboro). He reports that he and Marshall (his brother, also known as Sam) are alright but Captain [Thomas H.] Francis of company A suffered a foot injury and was left behind after the battle. After his experience he writes: "I never would have thought that human man could have suffered the exposure we were subject to." Ward is quite confident that the battle was a Confederate victory and gives details on the numbers of men killed, wounded and taken prisoner on each side. He writes that…

He describes the interior of his tent in detail including some of the books and newspapers sitting on his table. Ward tells his sister that he and his tent mate, Webber, have hired an old hotel cook at $40 per month to cook for them. Writes that he usually visits the ladies of the town he is in, but hasn't been to town this time because he has boils on his neck. In an effort to get rid of the boils, he has stopped eating meat and is taking a dash of salt every morning. He updates his sister on camp news and news of other soldiers. Writes to his wife from Camp Priceville, Mississippi. Discusses goods and currency values. Mentions a battle being fought in Murfreesborough (likely referring to the First Battle of Murfreesboro, fought on 13 July 1862 in Rutherford County, Tennessee), the number prisoners taken and the amount of damages is noted.
