General Thomas writes from Headquarters, Department of the Cumberland to an unnamed colonel. Requests that the colonel "give the enclosed list of relics to Mrs. Goddard with my compliments and say that I am sorry I can do no better for the Sanitary Commission's Fair now." States that already, many desirable relics have been taken from the battle fields of Chickamauga and Chattanooga, Tennessee. Two bust engravings of Thomas included as collateral.

He points out early Confederate victories at Mannassas and Big Bethel and the North's inability to find a successful commanding general for the western Federal army as evidence of major Yankee failures. Jeffery asserts that each time the Yankees have come into the South, they have been soundly "whipped", adding "...now that 'luck has changed' we may hope that success will follow success..." on to victory by wearing…

Names the battles he's participated which include Pea Ridge, Perryville, Stone River, and Mission Ridge. Gives an account of men in his company that were killed or wounded in Stone River, Chickamauga, and Mission Ridge. Tells his siblings that he will teach them how to make a soldier's holiday…
