Title: [Statement from an unknown witness regarding the 19 April 1861 Baltimore Riot]

Attests that police Marshal George Proctor Kane ordered men to protect the Union troops passing through the city. Claims that in the confusion, Union soldiers fired indiscriminately into the mob, which included Mayor George W. Brown. Recalls "laboring under violent excitement ... for who could look calmly on and see the 'Yankee Miscreants' shoot our people in the Streets."

Based on the request of Maryland Governor Hicks, Colonel John G. Johannes recalls events of the Baltimore Riot. States that 19 April 19, 1861, after spotting a signal light from the Armory of the Maryland Guard, he consulted his Commander, who had been dispatched to the office of George Proctor Kane, Marshal of Police. Claims that General Charles Calvert Egerton ordered Johannes and thirty men to report to Kane immediately. Recalls that bridges into the city were burned "entirely by the police force under the immediate eye of the marshall."

This is in reference to the arrival of the French frigate "Ambuscade," which brought news of the French declaration of war against Great Britain.

Letter is not signed but appears to be in Knox handwriting. Discusses the ongoing conflict with the settlers on the north part of the Waldo patent. Describes the issues of the conflict and the danger the surveyors are in. Requests the gentlemen show and explain the legal title of Brigadier Waldo and the heirs of that title to the settlers. Explains how the title and map will show who the land legally belongs too. Requests they also explain and show how Knox's lands are separate from the Plymouth Company lands, and that they have been surveyed and delivered by the Commonwealth to Knox.

Document is not signed but appears to be in Knox's handwriting. Appears to be information that Knox gathered from a Captain Hunter respecting Thomas's (possibly Walterman Thomas) information. It was reported the insurgent threaten to kill the settlers if they went out again. Also was reported that the settlers on the Plymouth Company lands stated they were willing to give a dollar for their lands and were encouraging Knox's settlers to do the same.
