Griffin on the second page indicates that the sale was recorded in the Liberty County records on 2 May 1841.

Title: [Certificate of Mary Smith's right to Texas land and her transfer of that land to A.J. Brightwell]

Certified, on 7 August 1843, that Mary Smith, a widow who came to Texas in August 1842, was entitled to a conditional grant of 640 acres in San Augustine County, Texas (accordance with a Texas congressional act passed 15 January 1842). Beneath it is a transfer of Smith's certificate to A.J. Brightwell dated 6 March 1850 and a attestation to the transfer by the clerk, P.M. Graham dated 18 March 1850. At the bottom of page two, George W. Smyth, the commissioner of the General Land Office, certified on 6 August 1850 that this document was a true copy.

A signed, handwritten statement by Blount, dated 18 January 1851 and stamped by a notary public of San Augustine County, transfers the debt to W.B.M. Shun. A note signed by Shun indicates he received payment on 8 May 1852. Document designated "No. 89" and stamped "paid."

Title: [Petition of a free black to become a slave of a master of her choice]

Petitions for the right to choose her master. States that since she is "a free person of Africa descent" she is entitled to "choose a master for herself and two said children," and the "petitioner makes choice of J.S.H. Hossack to become her master." Though free, Calvin has been struggling so badly to get by that she is willing to have a master of her choosing in exchange for subsistence for herself and her family. The men have marching orders but no information about how long they will stay in New Orleans. Damuth reminisces about Grant's succinct orders. Believes they will travel to "[Mobile] or Texas." Writes that the weather is mild, "I have seen warmer days up North than I ever saw here." General Banks and General Washburn reviewed the troops a few days before and "it was a grand sight we could see all the troops and the city of New Orleans."

The soldiers have been setting up camp in Berwick, tearing down old buildings and establishing their own quarters. It rains all the time and the men are woken in the night with their tents flooded, but they make the best of it. Damuth writes that he is only homesick when the weather is beautiful. He has been asked to name one of the children born into his family during his absence and suggests "if you want to name him after as great & good a man as ever lived call him Old Abe if after the meanest one call him after any Copper head."
