He apologizes for not having written on Friday or Saturday, explaining that he had been on a battalion problem. He also writes of the admiration that he has for Texas and its inhabitants, describing the "intense pride and loyalties the Texans have for their state and its History" as "remarkable".

Diamond explains to Estelle that although El Paso is theoretically a "dry" town in that it is forbidden to serve mixed drinks there, it is full of liquor stores. So, soldiers in need of a drink merely buy the liquor, and then order the mixers separately from hotels or bars. Sidney tells Estelle that he is an overstrength officer; the company already has full complement of officers so he is void of any duties of consequence. He also describes the curfew system implemented in the camp.
