Contains alphabetical list of names in the style of a ledger or account book, often with numbers and/or letters written in the column before the name. This appears to be the original use for the volume. Most names in the latter half of the alphabet have been crossed out. There are notes in a different hand concerning scientific, industrial, and medical matters that fill the balance of the volume. These notes contain, among other things, cures for rheumatism and cholera, and methods for the manufacture of glue and processing of iron.

Tells Davis that his European merchants would surely be interested in his "excellent grey and yellow oak lumber which has been seasoned in the fall water for three years."

Mentions that he has been in contact with General Benjamin Lincoln regarding the amount of shells to order, but asks Faesch to write to him to get a final decision on the subject. Also suggests that Faesch imprint a letter "F" on one side of these shells and the letters "U.S." on the other.

Marked "copy." Includes several letters. The first, to Mr. [Life] Wilson, provides instructions for him to build a saw mill in the St. Georges region of Maine using lumber from Mr. James Waller Head. The second note, to Mr. Head, asks him to provide lumber to Mr. Wilson. The third, to Mr. Dunton, asks Dunton to provide Wilson with supplies. The last, apparently to Mr. Vose, provides a variety of instructions about a canal-building project.

Second page is a message to the Senate and the House of Representatives about his decision to sign the Tariff Act of 1816 which protected American industries from British competition.
