Advises that the guns will be inspected by a member of the U.S. ordnance corps. Informs that the guns weight 900 pounds each, the shot 65 pounds, and the shells, 50 pounds. Discusses the costs. States that these guns will be cast using the "Rodman patent." Remarks, "Such guns cannot be obtained at any other foundry in the U.S." Marked copy on docket. Advises that Mr. Kemble of New York will appoint an inspector for the cannons in case Lieutenant Balsh cannot find one. Viele might have been worried about getting his payment as the war drew nearer.

Jefferson states that he received the decree against the Henderson's and is satisfied with it. He discusses the legal proceedings against his neighbors, the Henderson family, who built a mill and dam downstream from Jefferson's mill and dam on the Rivanna River. Their dam was affecting the water flow to his property. He remarks that he does not know if the defendants will oppose the decree, and mentions that all of the defendants but three are infants.

Harding acknowledges how the "railroad situation" affects Rapp's business and indicates that he wants "the government policy to be one leading to the railway restoration" but admits a current discouraging outlook. Letter signed 18 days after his inauguration and written on White House stationery. Rapp worked for the Prendergast Company of Marion, Ohio, and was an old friend of Harding's.

Probably unrelated to the Convention and accidentally inserted by Butler into these papers. Consists of a report requested by Jefferson as U.S. Minister to France, while in Paris, and prepared for the Charleston Chamber of Commerce. The report apologizes for its figures, "all the Books of the Custom House being carried away by the British" when they captured Charleston in 1780.

With French text. Prints a proclamation by Governor Moore calling for a General Assembly in Shreveport, the temporary capital of Louisiana. Articles describe female soldiers and war industries. Includes several ads, among which is one offering full amnesty for AWOL soldiers, another for gunboat artillery recruits, and one for a slave sale. Printed on blue/green floral wallpaper. After Baton Rouge fell in early 1863, Governor Moore moved the state capital to Opelousas. When that city was captured by Union troops, the capital was moved to Shreveport.
