Title: to Tobias Lear re: attempted murder of Dey, and English/French relations

Mountford describes attempted assassination of the Dey of Algiers by four Turkish soldiers "each armed with two pistols, a Carbine & an atagon . . . . His attendants were at the distance of 60 yards & instantly ran to his assistance, and stoned to death, three of these assassins on the spot . . . . A more miraculous escape never happened." The "King of England, had observed in his last speech to parliament, that negociations for peace were on foot, between his nation & France." Mountford was Lear's secretary in Algiers. Announcement of the assassination of President Lincoln on page four. Also includes a front page article entitled "feeling of the people of the north toward the south." The Whig was the first newspaper in the South to print the news of the assassination. The paper is uncut.

Title: W.J. Ferguson, actor, dies; saw Lincoln shot

Newspaper clipping announcing the death of W.J. Ferguson, the last living actor to have witnessed the assasination of President Lincoln. Ferguson played the part of Lietenant Vernon in "Our American Cousin." The actor and Laura Keene were in the wings when Booth shot the president. Ferguson always insisted that Booth never shouted "sic semper tyrannis!"
