Bogert writes to his parents from camp near White House, Virginia. Relates that he was previously ill but is feeling better. States that his regiment is marching, but is unsure of their destination. Expects that they are travelling to Richmond, Virginia, possibly to meet with regiments that were at Suffolk, Virginia. Patriotically declares "I do not know or care particularly where we go all I want Is to do my duty In whatever place they may send us ... " States that General John James Peck is present in camp. Instructs his parents to send correspondence to Fort Monroe, Virginia.

Many men are sick due to the poor climate, and he has sent many of the ill to northern hospitals. Local women have come into camp to ask for food. A Black man tells him about the marriage of their brother Robert, who had been there in Vicksburg two months previously. Robert served as a surgeon in the Confederate Army.

Remarks that the men in camp seem very nonchalant about the small pox outbreak. He writes that the hospital building and all the clothes from infected soldiers will be burned. Regarding the question of sending part of the army to Boston, writes "[the topic] was so fully discussed at the time it was propos'd and the conclusion drawn that it would be unnecessary to say any thing further on the subject..." Argues that during the winter "the army should be held in as collected a state as possible." Notes that the only argument against gathering the army in one location will be the difficulty of obtaining supplies and provisions. Advises against dividing the army into cantonments.…
