Gardiner, a Civil War veteran from New York, relates that he recently visited West Point. Discusses the false claims of a young man in Louisville, Kentucky, who is posing as Hunt's son. The young man had introduced himself to some of Hunt's acquaintances there, including General Sloan, Medical Director of the Department of the South. Of the incident, remarks "It is a rich drama- and I am only sorry that a distance of a thousand miles- prevents the tow of your boot giving a finale to the reverse of the medal of the young scamp."

Includes printed orders issued 24 August 1849 by W. G. Freeman, Assistant Adjutant General, from the Headquarters of the Army at West Point. Orders discuss organization and command of artillery regiments. These orders are followed by a note initialled and handwritten by Henry Jackson Hunt. Hunt's initialed note reads, in part: "…And then the Asst Genl detailed as he saw fit - it was from trouble giving out of a detail made by the AG for a light battery that I had charged preferred against me by him…1876-7." Hunt discusses the 18 June 1870 issuance of orders similar to general orders no. 14.

Title: Sword of William E. Jones

Non-commissioned officer's sword, model 1840. Used at West Point and owned by William E. Jones. Inscribed "Ames &Mfg. Co., Chicopee, Mass." The Ames Manufacturing Company was founded in 1835 in Chicopee, Massachusetts. The company manufactured small tools, cotton machinery, swords, and cannon; they contracted with the U.S. Government to provide several thousand guns for the War with Mexico in 1845. Ames produced more swords for the American military than any other company before or since.

Lee was the only son of Lee's enrolled at West Point in 1851. Andrews erroneously believes that the Lee referred to in "that slanderous report against the room of those fine Cadets Lee, Wood, & Turnbull" was Stephen G. Lee, son of Thomas Lee of South Carolina. He is unable to forward a letter that is among his Mother's papers in Chicago. The letter, written by Ulysses S. Grant before his death, requested that Frederick's son Ulysses S. Grant III, be admitted to West Point. It was cosigned by William T. Sherman and written "to the President, whoever he might be." President Mckinley endorsed the letter and ordered Ulysses III to be admitted to West Point.
