Responds "I think as much of my country as anyone." Reports the crops have been threshed resulting in 188 bushels of wheat and 147 bushels of oats. Says he won't sell the wheat yet because the price is one dollar fifty cents per bushel and he thinks it will go higher. Envelope includes a three cent stamp.

Writes to Bell from the "Rooms of General Court Martial" in Memphis. Claims it's a night for lovers; with dry weather and a shining moon. Informs her there is a "Tin Pan Alley" and shooting gallery in the basement of his building. Reports Union General Ralph P. Buckland won't permit any troops to leave Memphis. Says they expect Confederate General James R. Chalmers to try and take Memphis. States the results of the election were one hundred eighty-nine total votes; one hundred sixty-seven for the Union candidate and twenty-seven for the Democratic. Includes a three cent stamp on the envelope.

Inquires about the new city of Washington, D.C. Varnum was a U.S. Representative from Massachusetts from 1795-1811.

James speaks of Swett's appointment to collectorship and how they must wait on the "Power of Recommendations" or the "Power & influence of the recommendations." James speaks of other members in the Senate who would be comfortable with Swett's appointment. Swett requests that Varnum replies with comments regarding James' letter.

William Freame Johnston was nominated by the North American Party to run for vice president with John C. Fremont on the Republican ticket but withdrew.
