Says he is now detached from the USS "Perry" and has been ordered to report to Flag Officer Stringham at Hampton Roads for duty on the USS "Wabash." Took the oath of allegience that morning and will start for Hampton Roads tomorrow. Says the "Wabash" is going to sea immediately with the "Minnesota" and the "Pawnee." Is afraid that he might not get there before the "Wabash" leaves because of "red tapeism."

Written at camp near Rolla, Missouri. The scouting party has captured a secessionist who is now in the guard house. Thinks that the prisoner will be made to take an oath of loyalty to the Union then released. They may deal with him more harshly because Missouri is now under martial law. He has been digging trenches and chopping down trees to prepare for a Confederate attack. They have four 32 pound cannon to emplace and are digging positions for them. Partially printed certificate shows Jacob Rambo voluntarily enlisted at Fort Washington in the first regiment of levies to serve for six months. Also shows that Rambo swore an oath of allegiance. These levies were raised from a law signed by President Washington on 3 March 1791 to raise troops on the frontier. The document is signed twice by Rambo using an "X" for his mark. Sworn before and signed by A.E. Outlaw. Fort Washington was near Cincinnati, Ohio.
