General McClellan gave orders for boxes to be forwarded because he "could not spare the gunboats to guard them up and down the James river." He has not heard from Charles. Joseph has gives a list of the wounded, which includes James Miller, James McAtee, and Wilmor Morris.

Charles has been wounded. He intended to visit Wilmor on his way to see his brother Joseph E. but was unable to. Joseph E. is now three miles south of Harpers Ferry. Samuel asks Wilmor's opinion of the removal of McClellan from the command of the Army of the Potomac, but reserves his own judgment stating that "time will test the matter wither for good or for ill." He prays that peace will be "reestablished on the ruins of Southern Secession."

Watson considered writing earlier but explains "I know you get all the current news of your old haunts from the fair sex." He reports that conditions are improving, most of the "iron works, rolling mills, glass houses etc. have resumed operations," and predicts it is "very likely the northern states will see tolerable good times this winter." He reminds Wilmor that "there are thousands upon thousands of pulses beating in expectation of your efforts." He heard that Senator Baker from Creyor was killed in a skirmish under General Stone.

Miller says if he could obtain a furlough for twenty days, he would be willing to "support old Abe in his war policy even to the freeing of the niggers." He tells Wilmor that he could "do almost any of the girls justice" including "my Mary as you called her" were he at home. Miller cautions Wilmor that it is "nearly all republicans" who are down on McClellan and "the best reason they can give is because he is a democrat." He believes McClellan was removed "because he was slow in his movements."

He would like to be with Grant's army. He advises his mother on financial affairs, to sell some property and invest the money in government bonds. He gives the interest of the bonds in greenbacks as $492, and in gold as $800. He gives the recent report of a battle [Cold Harbor], but adds that he must wait until he receives the New York papers before he knows what really happened.

He gives his mother advice on selling one of their lots and building a house on another. He visits the 100th regiment which is camped 10 mile from Richmond.

They have received word of the capture of Atlanta. His train and depot were inspected and Col. Howard said, "he never before saw a depot in as good order..." Grant's army has taken possession of the Weldon railroad. He is trying to find a substitute for his brother George. Walbridge had hoped to send a colored man up to Buffalo to take George's place, but General Butler forbid any black man from leaving the department. He hopes a friend of his can find a white substitute.

He wishes his mother would not feel guilty about using the money he sends home, and instructs her to hire a servant if she intends to take in boarders. Thomas [Colson, see # 80.] has had financial troubles. Walbridge offered him a job at $30 a month plus board. Reports on the success of Sheridan at Winchester.

Received a package from home. The honey jar broke and made everything sticky, but did no real damage. A family across the river sent some butter and wine jelly as a thank you for ice sent to them when they were sick. The family had treated McClellan's troops well in 1862 and as a result, had special privileges with the current army.

The blacksmith shop has been rented out. Mentions rumor that the army will move soon and General Wool has stopped issuing furloughs. Smith begs his wife not to mention his liquor consumption. He assures her that he is now a sober man and it hurts him to have her constantly mention his past drinking. Smith believes his wife does not want him to come home and hopefully suggests that they forget the past and work on their future.

The army is still in the same location and is in a state of suspense concerning what will happen next. General Burnside announced a Grand Review which was canceled due to rain. One man in the regiment contracted small pox. The doctors isolated him in the woods where he died and was buried.

Rain and mud foiled the attack on Fredericksburg. The pontoons and artillery became stuck in the mud. Confederate soldiers taunted the stranded union soldiers by offering to help build the pontoon bridge, if the federals could get the pontoons to the river. A snow storm has left fifteen inches of snow on top of the already deep mud. Generals Burnside, Franklin, and Sumner have resigned and General Hooker is now in command of the army. There is much sickness in the regiment.

The snow has melted but the weather remains bitterly cold. He reiterates the changes in command discussed in the previous letter. Also mentions losses to his unit and the 72 PA. The latter has only 300 men on active service out of the 1,880 who enlisted nineteen months ago.

The army has begun to issue furloughs. The mud is still extremely deep. He discusses the children's health and whether or not they should attend school. He speculates on Hooker's plans for the army. "Joe Hooker will do One of 3 things he will eather [sic] take us out of Virginia or else we shall advance toward Richmond & if we advance we shall give the Rebels the damdest licking they ever had or they will us & I am afraid it will be us that will get it."
