Vignetted half-length standing portrait of Union general Henry Slocum, Sr. in Napoleonic pose. Clothing, hands, and parts of face heavily painted over. Water stains at the edge. Slocum led and participated in several campaigns throughout the American Civil War, including the Maryland Campaign and the Carolina Campaign. He resigned his commission on September 28, 1865 and returned to New York, where he unsuccessfully ran for New York secretary of state that year. Slocum served three terms as a Democratic Congressman in the U.S. House of Representatives (from 1869 to 1873 and from 1883 to 1885).
