They received orders to go to New Haven where he expects life to be much harder as they will have to stay in tents. He describes his daily routine. They have a dress parade every night and drill 4-5 hours a day. General Mansfield was killed in battle.

He thanks her for the medicine she sent to ease his diarrhea. He comments on the expedition Gen. Banks has been leading from Berwich Bay as one of the most successful of the war. He describes the Rebel prisoners.

Title: 1867 Diary

Newspaper clippings inserted at beginning with Washington's General Order, July 1776 and McClellan's General Order, September 1861. Also positions of the sun and moon and on the back, a list of the original 13 states and all the signers of the declaration. Records the weather. On February 23rd, he mentions the nomination of Mr. Fred S.M. Nelly for U.S. senate. On March 11, the daughter of an acquaintance was severely burned with camphine. Many entries are cross written. Newspaper clippings inserted throughout. Some expanded entries in the back. He mentions the son of Mr. Young who drowned.

They will not start for home until the 10th or 15th of next month. 2 regiments of cavalry from General Grant's army came in a captured 50 prisoners. In all they ahd about 1100 prisoners. They also took African-Americans and put them right into the army

Records the weather. On May 31st, he talks about the battle of Hanover Court. On July 5th, he talks about the news from McClellan's army. On September 5th, they are preparing to be mustered. Septemberr 7th has them about to leave their current encampment.

Pencil inscription on front reads "James F. Rusling. Nash[ville]." The photograph shows a street with wood plank sidewalk and four buildings to the left hand side of the image. The first building has a sign reading, "Office Post Quartermaster." A group of soldiers stand on the sidewalk in front of the Quartermaster's office. Four women and one small girl stand on the porch of the second building. A group of civilian men stand on the sidewalk near the third and fourth building. A label on the reverse notes that the image is from the Robert Schoelkopf Gallery.
