One engraving entitled "Attack on Fredericksburgh-Dec. 1862" dated 1863. Depicts a scene from the Battle of Fredericksburgh, December 11-15, 1862. In the forefront of the image, Union forces use boats and pontoon bridges to cross a river into Fredericksburg. engraved after an original painting by Alonzo Chappel in the possession of the publishers at time of engraving. Henry has been on the march since he last wrote and expects to be for some time to come. There are about 40,000 troops there and more are always arriving. They killed fourteen men in a skirmish with Morgan's Cavalry.

They have had some very difficult marches and battles and have advanced through the Cumberland Mountains "driving the rebels before us." He reports that "Bragg with the rebel army has gone to Chattanooga and will make ready there for another big fight." They have taken many prisoners who seem to be "discouraged about Bragg's movements." John is improving. Henry has been in command of a different company since all its officers are ill.

General Buckner is about three miles from their picket lines "and we must be on the watch for him for he is a cunning old cuss and keeps our Pickets in constant terror." Their lines "extend East & West for fifteen miles" and "they are slowly moving about 2 miles" a week. They may move to Murfreesboro soon "provided we can drive out the rebels."

Describes a series of events including a skirmish with General Hood's forces and the battles of Franklin and Nashville. Writes that some men from the company were lost and some "pretty badly demoralized". Also writes that the soldiers are living on half rations, which is tough, but he can endure it as he has two more years of service. Written near Rodgersville, Alabama.

Writes that they can only send letters every four days now, and soon he will not be able to send any letters for two or three weeks. They are in the Shenandoah Valley, Virginia within 25 miles of Staunton, Virginia and nearly 100 miles from Harpers Ferry, Virginia. They have had two battles since he last wrote, one at Winchester, Virginia (Battle of Opequon or the Third Battle of Winchester, 19 September 1864) where "this Regiment captured a brigadier General. He reports that there are currently only nine companies of his regiment still in Winchester, as six of the companies left for Strasburg on April 21st.
