Urging Kentuckians to join the Confederate cause, during his first raid into Kentucky. Proclaims: "Better death in our sacred cause, than a life of slavery! Young men of Kentucky flock to my standard, it will always wave in the path of honor, and history will relate how you responded to my appeal, and how, by so doing, you saved your country." Printed on a press Morgan had recently captured at Hartsville.

Informs the authorities of Rome "There is a Federal Force of Fifteen Hundred cavalry marching on your place I am pursuing them prepare your selves to Repulse them- they have 2 Mountain Howitzers. I will be close on them I have kild 300 of thir men They are Runing for their lives."

Title: [Message to the Confederate House of Representatives vetoing an act for investigating committees].

Vetoes "an act to aid committees of Congress in the investigation of matters referred to them and to punish false swearing before said committees" passed by the Confederate Congress. Davis believes that conferring upon the Congress the power to fine and imprison those appearing before it without trial would be unconstitional. Such powers are reserved for the judicial branch. The fourth leaf has a purple stamp which has been obliterated, possibly a Rebel War Archive stamp.

The enemy, centered at Jacksonville, numbers at least 15,000, he relates. General Baldwin informs Major Flowerree, an assistant adjutant general (for General Dabney Herndon Maury), that an unofficial report informed of thirty seven deserters from the 37th Mississippi Regiment the previous night. Notes that the Big Black River can only be crossed in two locations, and that guards placed at these points could easily apprehend deserters. Autograph endorsement signed by General Maury, on verso, written 4 February 1863. Maury forwards and approves, stating that measures "may be at once adopted for the arrest and punishment of deserters..." Another note on verso states…

At the time the Confederate invasion of Kentucky was going successfully, as they successfully pushed further into the state.

Says his position is critical, with the enemy only "a few hundred yards" away, and he will need reinforcements, "three full Brigades." Wonders if he will receive them since General Johnston's "attention is now entirely to the left." Written at 8:15 PM just two days before the battle of Seven Pines began in full. Minor skirmishes, which Hill was involved in, had already begun. The battle of Seven Pines would be the closest Union troops got to Richmond before 1865. Robert E. Bust portrait of Robert E. Lee in the United States Army before the Civil War. Based on an early photograph of Lee. Previous catalog entry identified Lee as a major in this photo, while some sources indicate this photo depicts Lee as lieutenant colonel, a rank he attained by the end of the Mexican War. Lee's photo is pasted to the back of a vignette portrait of an unidentified soldier. The soldier's photo contains a Kellogg Brothers stamp, and was possibly a Connecticut Militiaman. Circa date based on the Mexican War.

Shows Robert E. Lee as an older man in dark civilian clothing, seated in a room with an old mantel clock. The clock appears to have been insribed with "M.B. Brady, Washington, D.C."
