The name "John Burns" is penciled in on the mount next to the printed title to indicate that he is the "old patriot" in question. View of John Burns's house, which is no longer standing, and surrounding buildings. Very sharp and clear view of the farm buildings. Note the decorative window coverings. One photograph entitled, "Simple fracture of the middle third of the left femur, united without deformity," taken by Charles Milton Bell dated August 1865. Image is of Lieutenant A. W. Starkweather of Indiana, who was thrown from his horse at Black and White Station, Virginia on April 28th, 1865, fracturing the shaft of his left femur. He was admitted to Armory Square Hospital on May 7th. Verso indicates that the photgraph was taken in early August,1865 and that "the case was selected as an interseting illustration of a successful result in a simple fracture of the femur."

The building was constructed in 1853 and used as a hospital until 1873 (taken over by the Marines after the end of the siege in 1863). Demolished in 1892. A print of a photograph of the Washington, DC headquarters of Brigadier General Hardin. Brigadier General Martin D. Hardin put was in command ofthe defenses of Washington from 1864 to the end of the war. He is just left of the tree on the corner, missing the left arm he lost in Confederate guerrilla ambush. The glass of the lamp post on the corner reads "19th Street West." The headquarters was located at the intersection of 19th St. NW and Pennsylvania Ave. The crowd consists mainly of well dressed civilian men and women with a few soldiers. Title: Dead Confederate soldier badly mutilated in field near Rose Woods, Gettysburg, 5 July 1863.

Image of a horribly mutilated corpse. The soldier's stomach has been ripped open and a dismembered hand lies near the body [which was probably moved into the shot from further away]. The soldier was either blown open by an artillery shell or had been nawed on by hogs that roamed the field after the battle. According to William Frassinito in "Gettysburg: A Journey in Time," Gardner placed the rifle across the soldiers leg and placed an artillery shell just above his knee.
