Their orders to leave were countermanded. The graves on the battlefield sadden him to think of all the brave men lost on behalf of their country. The mail was robbed and this letter was taken but he found it floating in the river the next morning.

He was detailed and had to leave the 79th to work a twelve pound brass cannon in the 20th Ohio Battery. He does not feel in any more danger as "I can dodge a shell or canon ball some times but a musket ball I can not." The battery consists of two brass cannon and four rifle cannon. With note to Phebe Jane Walker on verso re: ballad composed in honor of Joseph Walker.

They took 200 prisoners from Bragg's army and Grant took 200,000 at Vicksburg. He believes Banks will be "good for port Hudson." Meade defeated Lee at Gettysburg and Lee is retreating with a loss of 30,000 men. "There is no doubt but that lee's hole armey will be captured." General Morgan has crossed the Ohio River into Indiana and Jones thinks he will be captured.

I am but doing justice to him, as well as to myself, to recommend him to your warmest and most favorable consideration."

Washington, Jr., has been in the hospital and is about to be released. He is still weak and jobless, however, and Washington comments, "the school's attitude has been most unfriendly to us all, since my father's death. It is truly a tragic situation for us all." Includes first day issue stamp and envelope cancelled at Tuskegee (see GLC05508.255.03).

He thanks Child for the translation of George Sand.

Expresses concern that the departure of Colonel [Philip van] Cortlandt's regiment left the Fort's artillery and stores in a vulnerable state: "...we are no protection to the Inhabitants & in Case the Enemy should make an attempt upon us I fear the Consequence." Reports that Captain Elsworth and two other men were recently killed "by the Indiands [sic] they took three prisoners also amongst the latter is one of my Compy..."
