A typed note on the mount indicates that the photograph was taken by "Black," referring to James Wallace Black, a noted Boston photographer. The mount also includes the address of Black's studio in Boston, "163 & 173 Washington Street," which he owned in partnership with fellow photographer John G. Case.

View of large field with the camp of the 31st infantry visible in the center. The 31st was a regiment of Pennsylvania volunteers organized in Harrisburg in June 1863 and mustered out in August 1863. Fence runs diagonally across two-thirds of the image. A few soldiers are pictured standing near the tents. Another smaller camp is seen in the distance, to the right of the main camp. Homes are visible in the far background, in front of a large forest of bare trees.
