While describing dissenssions between denominations in various countries, Adams suddenly stops and asks instead for people to pray for those who fight each other. He calls upon his listeners "Let us teach them by the example of harmony among ourselves, how good and how pleasant a thing it is for brethren (and sisters) to dwell together in unity...when they shall have found...harmony among themselves, we shall be ready…

Roosevelt inscribed this printed edition of his "Open Letter" sent to newspapers to Edward E. Swadener. Roosevelt argues that religious belief should not be a litmus test for candidates, claiming that political history shows people of certain faiths representing constituents with beliefs differing from their own. He dwells at length upon the anti-Catholic attacks on Taft during the last presidential election because of his supposed Catholic sympathies. He argues for tolerance.

Santayana notes their similar religious background but claims to have never left the Catholic church because he never had a sense of being in it, although he does "think in its terms." He discusses Schaffer's need to explain "our existence" beyond the merely scientific. Santayana views looking for such an explanation as absurd. He concludes: "A moral solution arrived at prudently is a help in life, but, it need not be a metaphysical one."

The proclamation establishes colonial rule over former French and Spanish possessions in Canada, Florida, Grenada and other areas; it offers tolerance to Roman Catholics; it calls for governments and assemblies like those in existing colonies and recognizes the rights and land ownership of Indian tribes. He concludes by writing that he became a priest in order to best follow Christ and Gospel.
