Reports that Madame de Leval has not yet arrived, so he does not yet know what the Committee will decide regarding their application. He is still of the same opinion he had been, however. Informs Knox that he has received some news that the Committee might assist them in obtaining a quick settlement and continues to discuss further land business.

Encloses a copy of a letter he received from Duer, stating that he will wait for further instructions from Knox before he does anything about Duer's letter. Says that Captain [John] Hills, a surveyor working for Knox, will travel to Philadelphia the following day. Discusses Knox's canal project, noting that Hills could not finish his survey due to the bad weather. Adds that the survey will soon be finished, and some final calculations need to be made.

States, "from drinking too freely of Wine yesterday, I have such a headache, that I am unable to write you but a word - " Informs Knox that he refused the request of de Leval and de la Roche because the land has not been surveyed, thus the deeds would not bear the correct acreage. Jackson received Secretary of War Knox's letter of 10 April 1791. Comments on various military appointments and the recruits from Massachusetts. He says, "the Officers in this Town have inlisted five or six but they are not such men as you want for the service." Mentions that "gentlemen" in the area are pleased that Knox has sent people to survey the area for the canal. Writes that "Mr. Jonathan Jackson will try to hold both his appointments, that of Marshal, and in the Excise." Jackson does not approve. Gives his opinion to Knox about other candidates.

Relates that as Congress passed a new resolve empowering Hutchins to appoint people to the position, if the original appointees do not arrive within a certain amount of time, he thinks this would be a good opportunity for Sargent, who is eager to work for Hutchins as a surveyor.
