Return for rations of Captain Thomas Patten's Company of Artillery Artificers belonging to the Ordnance Department. 65 sergeants and privates received 1 1/2 rations per day from 21 March to 24 March for a total of 407 rations delivered (this included 17 extra rations). Signed by Captain Patten and countersigned by John Lillie. There are two notes on verso -- one signed by Captain Patten details the troops on furlough in his unit and the other was signed by Sergent George Groom, who stated contractors delivered the 407 rations.

Henry writes to his mother from Camp Griffin. Reports that he sent five dollars to her. States there is not much to do other than guard and picket duty. Comments he weighs 156 pounds and many men are sick. Explains that they won't move on to Manassas due to the mud, as "...they cannot move the cannons." Letter is on yellow paper with a patriotic emblem.

In a letter to his mother, Henry discusses in detail the cost of food. Reports sending money to them and complains about backpay. States they are camped on a large field with calvary and artillery within view of the rebel's picket. Mentions killed and wounded men. Also includes a note to his sister. No location is mentioned, but previous research suggested that he wrote this letter from Savages Station outside Richmond, Virginia.

Writes letter addressed to his wife and friend, which explains that he left Yorktown this morning and is on march with the army to Richmond. Reports that they "have a good general at our hand this time and a good supply of cannon..." Shares with them his thoughts on Virginia, which he thinks is a beautiful state and would be very good for farming. Letter ends abruptly, pages probably missing. With additional scrap of paper, measuring 8.5 x 12.5 cm, addressed to "Dear Friend," which is unsigned and undated. Written by Major Shaw, an aide-de-camp to General Knox, to West Point Commissary James Forsyth to issue ten days provisions to Thomas Nelson, his wife, and two children. Nelson was late of the artillery and was detained by the sickness of his wife. Docket is signed by Nelson and a C. Brandy stating that contractors delivered the rations.

Title: Monthly abstract of extra issues, under the contract for the states of NYork & Jersey in the month of August, 1783

List of extra rations issued in August 1783. A total of 1,805 and 1/2 extra rations were issued for that month. The groups that received issues included: army prisoners, men on garrison fatigue duty, engineering department, police officers of the garrison, Indians, bargemen, discharged soldiers, artillery artificers, soldiers on command at sundry places, prisoners released from captivity, and British deserters. Colonel James Livingston was issued 155 of those extra rations.

List of extra rations issued at West Point. A total of 1,021 and 1/2 extra rations were provided in August 1783. Title: [Disposal of one hundred suits of clothing]

Written and signed for Knox by Samuel Shaw, Knox's aide-de-camp. Copy of a receipt for the disposal of 100 suits of clothing to the corps of artillery at Middlebrook, New Jersey on 2 July 1777. The clothing was sent from Philadelphia. The suits included coats, vests, breeches, stockings, shoes, and hats. The suits were issued to the companies of Captains Bauman, Doughty, Drury, Lillie, and Wool.
