Writes from Fort Ethan Allen. Informs Ogden he reenlisted twenty-nine days after being discharged from his old regiment. Says he reached Harrisburg, Pennsylvania when the Rebels were raiding Pennsylvania and "could not stand and see old Pa. invaded by no means while I have a hand to help her." He was assigned to the second New York Heavy Artillery but is unhappy with the position and wants to reenlist. States, "I am bound to stay in the army untill [sic] peace is declared for I think it is every mans dutey [sic] to help and get this settled."

Mentions that Stan's Battery was stationed on a hill, making a human wall across the entire hill and neighboring road. Implies that Hull denied this suspension, stating "... if you can not suspend with what I have requested in my two letters... you may deprive me of what command I have left in what manner you please..." Marched to Port Hudson on May 20th. Boarded the steamer Bard and sailed until sundown, when they arrived at Baton Rouge. Sailed 10 more miles the next day, and landed on shore. Got 100 rounds worth of cartridges, and then marched the rest of the way to Port Hudson. Rained "like the devil" that night; were "wet as cats." Marched the next afternoon until they were within two miles of their current position. Made their way to their current position the next day.
