Responds affectionately to a letter from Lucy asking what has become of him. Answers that he has not written because of how busy he has been (during the siege of Boston). Comments that the British are packing up and leaving Boston, and Knox expects to be in the town in 2-3 days, at which time he will also be able to visit her. He is uncertain where the British are going and in what state they will have left Boston, but states that "to New York my Dear Lucy [we] must prepare to follow them. As we are Citizens of the World any place will be our home & equally cheap." Copy.

Notes that the men need extra time to retrieve their belongings from Cambridge before their march. The Continental Army's position at Dorchester Heights had been integral to the success of the siege of Boston. Randall was a Lieutenant in Knox's regiment of artillery.

Reports difficulties in transporting ordnance and stores because of broken carts, the scarcity of food for the pack animals, and "Cattle very low in flesh." Indicates that "the Country people are very Spirited in Giving their Assistance." The road has been reported to be difficult and by some accounts impassable, but Stevens affirms his determination to fulfill his orders. Churchill's regiment is now stationed at Snyder's Bluff, where "the hole armey is bysly [busily] in Gaiged [engaged] in diging intrenchments and Bilding foarts…" From their vantage point above Vicksburg, they are "bombarding the sity With our Hevy Seage guns," though the Confederates only occasionally return fire. Churchill reports that the Confederates have tried to break through their lines on several occasions, only to be driven back each time. Churchill also reports good spirits among the soldiers, despite the fact that his company has no tents.

Churchill reports little action, with the exception of the artillery exchanging shots now and then. Camp was moved this morning and all are now engaged in erecting shelter against the sun, heat, and rain. Churchill was on the skirmish line all the previous day in a torrential downpour and the rain continues today. Little attention is being paid to occasional rebel shells, as they are doing negligible damage.

Knox wants William to join the artillery. Discusses the British troops' ineffectual cannon shot against the American works at Roxbury on 23 September 1775. Asks William to send one of the Watertown newspapers to Edward Parry, Esq. Some of the text on the original is faded.

His regiment suffered heavy casualties in the battle. They were caught in the crossfire of several Yankee infantry units and within the sights of an artillery battery. He also speculates on whether Yankees in Virginia or Tennessee fight harder. The end of this letter is missing. Docketed on the top of page one, " Jany 10th 1864."
