Responds to Captain Edward Burbeck's letter regarding Lieutenant John Edes' plans to leave the Continental Army (see GLC02437.00301). Knox does not object but must wait for George Washington to return from Philadelphia before a discharge can be issued. Places Edward Burbeck in charge of Edes' company. Indicates that he sent the pay certificate for Edward Burbeck's company, as requested. Asks that Colonel William Burbeck be informed that his pay has been given to his son, Lieutenant Henry Burbeck. Knox signed with his initials on the right hand corner of the first page.

Discusses General William Howe's position at Sandy Hook with 130 ships and his ability to strike the city in about three hours. On the verso, the letter is titled: "On the Publick Service." The Elizabethtown Committee informs George Washington that the British have landed on Staten Island and proceeded to within two miles of Elizabeth, New Jersey. The militia is gathering but the area is threatened. They are in need of artillery and request supplies from Washington. A post script specifies that their cannon bore is exactly 2.5 inches in diameter. Woodruff was the chairman of the committee. Possibly forwarded to Henry Knox because he commanded the artillery.

Asks William to send him money to buy a carriage, so that Lucy Knox can leave New York quickly if there is danger. Also asks him to send uniform buttons he previously wrote about (see GLC02437.00275). Wants William to keep him informed on what is done with the confiscated Tory estates. Requests a copy of Edes and Gill's monday newspaper. The British had left many supplies in Boston when they evacuated in March, 1776.
