Says the book should have appeal and that it has a few small mistakes "that no one except I would notice." Received a letter from her Aunt Martha, John Brown's only living sibling. Got fifty five dollars for one magazine article, but another was rejected. Her husband is ill, and she just took a mortgage on her ranch to pay debts.

He relates that his regiment left Memphis, Tennessee on December 23, 1861 and sailed toward Vicksburg, Mississippi (possibly on the Mississippi River). He writes that his recall is wanted by Hargous, Aspinwall, and Marcy so they may plunder Mexico without being watched. Postscript discusses a letter from ex-consul Forbes to Secretary of State Marcy that was printed in the New Orleans Picayune regarding the "lawless enterprises" lead by Gadsden.
