Von Steuben criticizes Aedanus Burke, aka "Cassius," the author of an anti-Society of the Cincinnati pamphlet ("Considerations on the Society or Order of Cincinnati," 1783). Burke, a South Carolina Supreme Court justice, accused the society of trying to create "a race of hereditary Patricians or Nobility," with von Steuben as their grand master. This document describes the visit of "Mr. John Pope or Colonel Pope" who was from near Richmond, Virginia. Reports that Pope claimed to have gone down the Ohio and Mississippi Rivers last spring in the employ of Patrick Henry and David Ross of the Virginia Yazoo Company. Pope claims to have met the governor of New Orleans (Miro Estevan) traveling up the Mississippi to the Walnut Bluffs to build a military base. States that a rumor is circulating regarding Virginia Congressman John Randolph's challenge to duel Webster. Instructs his brother-in-law Paige to alleviate his wife Grace's concern if Randolph's challenge is printed in the newspapers. Assures Paige of his safety, stating "There is not a gentleman in Washington whose bones are all safer in his skin than mine are." Hopes Paige can send him a letter from Randolph dated 1816 or 1817, possibly Randolph's first challenge to duel Webster. Marked copied and private. Year added in pencil at a later date.
