Phillips, an ardent abolitionist, informs Redpath that the "Traveller," a Boston paper, printed an article Phillips wrote. Asks Redpath to inform him why the "Post" would not print the article, and to cut and send a copy of the article from the "Traveller." Instructs Redpath to transmit the documents to the St. Denis Hotel in New York, New York; this letter was thus possibly written in New York. Circa years based on Phillips's publications within the Boston "Traveller."

Questions the veracity of the piece and suggests that if Roberts can provide evidence to his readers, this would create such indignation that it would "put an end to these atrocities." In a p.s. he warns him: "you will make no reference to this communication in your paper." Recipient is possibly the George Roberts who edited the Boston Times from 1852 to 1855.

Writes, "Publishing your letter as you wish could have just one effect- to aid the nomination of Gen Taylor as the Whig candidate for the President. Do you desire that? If not, be thankful that I do not submit such letters as yours to the public. I am doing what I can to defeat Gen. Taylor's nomination, and taking what I believe the best way to do it. If he is beaten at all, it will be by the use of Mr. Clay's nerve." Marked "private" at the top.
