The state of New Hampshire pays residents of Cornish "for public services done in the late War for which they have received no pay." Lists the names of colonels, captains, privates, and others. Also cites the reason for various expenses, such as for victuals, billeting, and raising men.

Letter written by Captain Lieutenant Belneavis to Lieutenant General Cunningham before both men were to depart for the West Indies. Says before he is to join the 45th Regiment of Foot, which is under Cunningham's command, he conceives it his duty to mention a few particulars of his service in order to promote a possible promotion. Said he went to America in 1776 and joined the 71st Regiment of Foot and fought in all their campaigns, both North and South. New York Governor Clinton writes to Major Collins to inform him that he disapproves of an enlistment scheme in Albany and has written "to Capt Marshall to put a stop to it, & discharge those Inlisted." Concludes: "I am surprizes that the Colonels shou'd suffer their Men to depart without proper Arms & Accoutrements, and I think that Colo Schuyler is in the right to provide them with what is necessary. A note by Clinton on the verso mentions a commission for Collins and the regulation of pay. Another note by Collins asks for blankets and guns.

Says captain Joseph Thomson can draw upon the state of Connecticut for three hundred pounds for military wages. Ordered by the committee of Safety. Signed by Huntington as "Clerk P.T." Docket on verso dated 15 November 1776 in Hartford. States the contents has been recieved by Joseph Thomas, and signed by Robert Brown.

Written by Major General Sullivan to Steele as Paymaster General of the Army. Official note requesting payment of 100 dollars to Morris Gibbons for "bringing off" 3 British prisoners. Co-signed by Secretary Bryan Bruin and countersigned by Morris Gibbons that he received the money. Dated without a year as 9 November. The year 1778 is inferred because Sullivan was named commander of Rhode Island in early 1778 until March 1779.

Receipt to the Committee of War in Rhode Island for Thomas Howard to receive his wages, which is 9 shillings New York currency, as a member of Major Burkett's Company. Says to pay unto Cornelius Culnon. The receipt also instructs to "deduct the Same Out of the Wages first due to me as a Soldier." Howard signed his mark with an "X." Document appears to have been written by Andrew Leishman.

Title: [Summary of troops and equipment surrendered to General Horatio Gates by General John Burgoyne]

An unknown person compiled statistics relative to Burgoyne's surrender to Gates after the Battle of Saratoga in 1777. The scrap of paper is dated in October 1781. Breaks down nationality of the captured soldiers, number of sick and wounded, types and number of artillery and small arms captured, etc. Also written on the sheet is a receipt for Daniel Epir to receive payment from Samuel Emory. On verso, in what appears to be an unrelated to the summary of captured troops, is a partial list of payments due to soldiers. They could be troops under Gates's command.

Title: to Ebenezer Hancock

Letter written in a secretarial hand, by Major General Heath's secretary Seth Loring, and signed by Heath. A request for payment of a soldier's wages sent to Ebenezer Hancock, Deputy Paymaster General of U.S. forces. John Black, a soldier in Captain Turner's company in Colonel Bradford's regiment was to receive "Twentysix Dollars & two thirds in full of four Months pay." Black was unable to withdraw his pay with the regiment because he was confined to the hospital. Note on verso, signed by John Black, states he received the money.

Title: to Ebenezer Hancock

Written by Major General Ward as commander of the Eastern Department (he was succeeded by Major General William Heath in March 1777) to Ebenezer Hancock as Deputy Paymaster General of U.S. forces. Order to pay Thomas Urann, Director of the Carpenter, forty six pounds and ten shilling, equal to 155 dollars, which was October's pay for him and the carpenters under him. On verso is breakdown of the pay for the carpenters. Urann made 6 pounds as foreman and the 9 "artificers" under him made 4 pounds 10 shillings each. Countersigned to by Thomas Urann that he received the money.

Signed "James Gould Ensign." Notes the reception of three pounds, ten shilling, and one penny, for himself and four others listed (John Divine, Jonathan Whitney, William Gibbs, and Phineas Chamberlain), not otherwise mentioned on a receipt. Gould had asked for pay for himself, Whitney, Gibbs and Chamberlain the previous month (see GLC01450.218.02).

Reminds Gerry that he has an "appointment upon a Committee to devise ways & means to supply the treasury to pay this Commonwealth's Quota of the army and other Exigencies of Government." This committee is to sit "until the bussiness is perfect." Also requests "your attendance as a Member of this house, as also to discharge the duties in consequence of your appointment yesterday." Letter signed by Davis as the Speaker of the Massachusetts House of Representatives.

Signed by Ellsworth as a member of the Connecticut Pay-Table Committee. To Connecticut Treasurer Jonathan Lawrence. Receipt says to pay Captain Elderkin over 83 pounds for the various expenses to treat the illnesses in his company in Colonel Mott's regiment. Note on verso says the money was received on 15 April 1777 and is signed by Nathaniel Webb. Docket says the payment was audited on 1 September 1777 by J. Treadwell. Related to GLC01450.240.

Title: [Instructions to the paymaster of expedition forces to make payments]

Hodgson, a major general and colonel of the 5th foot regiment, directs Charles Bembridge, the Deputy Paymaster General to the Forces on an Expedition, to make payments to several regiments, in the amounts listed. Hodgson had served as correspondent to British Secretary of War William W. Barrington before forming the 52nd of Foot and the Royal West Kent Regiments. Hodgson had participated in the April campaign to capture Belle Isle, off the coast of France. He was made a field marshal in 1796.
