Title: [Agreement for land]

Noted as a copy on the docket. Document is unsigned but appears to be in Knox's handwriting. Appears to be an agreement allowing Israel [Thorndale] to "enter" and "take hold" of a tract of land located in the back of Hampden, Maine (north of the Waldo patent). Includes details on the size of the land and the terms of the mortgage. Henry Knox, Henry Jackson, and Benjamin Lincoln's names are noted on the second page. There is a note at the bottom of letter says "The same to Benjamin [Pickman]."

Four parts. First part written in Boston, Massachusetts to Major Lemuel Trescott "to be communicated to Mr. Nathan Jones." Dated 12 March 1792. Writes that "[y]ou will please to proceed to Frenchmans Bay and with Mr. Nathan Jones endeavor to effect the purchase on my Acct. agreeable to the Inclosed Instructions directed to Mr. P. Bruce, Mr. Nathan Jones and yourself - " Goes on to say that the land must be looked after. Would like them to let him know any information they might have. Second part written in Trenton, New Jersey to Nathan Jones and Phineas Bruce. Dated 19 October 1791.…

States that he would like Captain John Hills, "a celebrated and scientific Surveyor and draughts man" to "make a perfect plan of the Waldo patent which has now become to me very interesting as I have agreed to purchase out the Winslow family." Explains that he is having some difficulty with the patent and wishes the recipient to aid Hills in surveying the land. Content suggests Henry Knox as the creator. Letterpress copy.

Discusses John St. John and the Prohibition party. Claims, "The Prohibitionist is here to stay..." Mentions he would like to visit. Declares "...a republican would be about as safe in the south as a St. John's man in Urbana..." Letter has several holes.

Is sorry to hear Longman is having so much trouble with the Flucker estate. Says "I have it the most speedy way to terminate the affair to assign to Mrs Horwood the legacy left to Mrs Knox by her uncle, in condition of her relinquishing certain lands. this business accordingly is put into a train of execution." Is sending Longman the first of 11 bills of exchange, each for 1,000 guilders. Believes each bill should be about 1,000 pounds sterling…

Wanted to transmit "The Brigadiers plan" in the mail, but it could not be folded small enough to be sent. Says the plan is on a coarse paper and is about 3.5 feet by 3 feet and "I conceive the plan by which a division was first made with the original proprietors - the patent is made to extend to a small point opposite Long Island, then back into the country 30 miles." Will send the plan to Boston, Massachusetts where it will be shipped by water. An indentured service contract between Friederich Gottman and Henry Knox. Gottman agrees to be Knox's servant for a term of five years and six months for his passage from Amsterdam. Upon completion of Gottman's term, Knox has agreed to give Gottman two new suits or 30 Spanish silver dollars. Contract signed by S. Farmer, Register.

Minutes taken on August 28, 1794. Lists the members in the town of Prospect, Maine and possibly the number of acres owned by each of them. Discusses further land deals. Also mentions agreements made with the people of Prospect township in 1788 and all who have arrived since. Notes 70 loads of hay has been cleared from the meadow. City was added later in red pen.
